A sweet treat: Friends of the Rocky River Public Library recently showed their appreciation for the RRPL Circulation Staff with a chocolate/citrus goodie basket.

Friends members offered their appreciation to the library staff for their ongoing dedication and service throughout the pandemic, including the curbside service during December and January.

The Friends group, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1971. It provides financial support and volunteer services to the library.

In the spotlight: In conjunction with the Bay High School centennial, students, teachers and alumni will present a talent show at 7 pm Saturday (Feb. 26) in the BHS auditorium. Tickets are $5 at the door and proceeds will benefit BHS Theatre.

The event is the third in the Centennial Celebration Series.

Alumni interested in having an act added to the lineup should contact Luke Scattergood, talent show director, at luke.scattergood@bayk12.org.

Summer bridge signup: Lake Erie Bridge is accepting registrations for summer bridge groups. There are openings in different groups playing in the following restaurants: Arrabiata’s in Bay Village, Canary’s in North Olmsted, the Cleveland Yacht Club in Rocky River, King Wah in Rocky River and Sangria in Westlake.

Those who don’t already have a partner can connect with others. In the “Find-A-Partner” group, players will play with a new partner each time.

Summer sessions play twice in June, twice in July and once in August. Typically, play begins at 11 am with 20 hands and a break for lunch, which varies from a buffet, off the menu or a selection for a set fee ranging from $10 to $17.

Reminder: A free grab-and-go meal will be offered beginning at 4:30 pm Saturday (Feb. 26) at Clague Road United Church of Christ, 3650 Clague Road in North Olmsted.

Meals are served from the back door of the church by masked, gloved volunteers. Drive to the rear of the church and they will bring out your meal. The event will run until the food runs out.

The meal is hosted by Church of the Redeemer in Westlake, and Clague Road Church, which is celebrating its centennial this year.

Paczki time: Fat Tuesday is March, 1, which means It’s paczki time. For those who may be unfamiliar with the term, paczki (pronounced poonch key) aren’t just any old donuts.

This popular Polish pastry is made from a rich, sweet yeast dough consisting of eggs, butter and milk. They can be filled with a variety of things, including fruit, jelly, lemon and more, and often are topped with powdered sugar.

They are a Fat Tuesday specialty at many area bakeries. If you’ve never tried one, there’s no time like the present. But you might want to pre-order, since they tend to sell out quickly.

Caregiver Corner: The Alzheimer’s Association Cleveland Area Chapter has launched a new Facebook series to help Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers.

The Facebook Caregiver Corner Series is a noontime program focused on a series of topics with a question-and-answer session for caregivers to get details, advice and tips about topics ranging from how to care for yourself as a caregiver to how to address eating and nutrition for your loved one and tips on traveling with your loved one.

The free sessions are broadcast at noon the last Monday of each month at noon on the association’s Facebook page. The next Caregiver Corner will be at noon Feb. 28.

The Caregiver Corner series augments the association’s regular educational programs. Those sessions, delivered through videoconferencing, often last an hour.

Rebecca Hall, program director for the Cleveland Area Alzheimer’s Association, said the Facebook Caregiver Corner Series offers caregivers a shorter educational session — lasting about 15 to 20 minutes — with a greater opportunity for them to share immediate issues.

Because of COVID-19, unpaid caregivers are spending more time with their loved ones and possibly more time doing direct care. Alzheimer’s caregivers are reporting that they feel isolated, lonely and overwhelmed.

Caregivers also can contact the Cleveland Chapter during office hours at 216-342-5556 or through the 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.
